Thankyou, Dolly for today’s message yet again. I should have written to you before over these weeks, but I could not not write today.
The story of ‘Peter walking on water’ reminded me of a Bible study we started when I was in Tarves. We were using the study materials of John Ortberg – ‘If you want to walk on water, you have to get out of the boat’.
We all listened to the introductory video and then read the passage you read this morning and went through questions etc. After we finished, we all went home.
No sooner were we home and put the kettle on than the phone rang. This was one of our elders in whose home we held the Bible Studies.
She was almost tripping over her words in her determination to get out what she was saying – as if it would mean she couldn’t shrink from it later.
Her name happened to be Isobel, a teacher, and she said that she had realised tonight that she had to step out of the boat now! For a long time, she had felt she would love to start a Scripture Union, or similar, after-school club, but had always ended up stepping back – lacking confidence and belief in herself to take that step. However, after the study tonight, she said – ‘I realised I had to take that step out of my comfort zone – trusting not in myself, but stepping out in faith, eyes fixed on Jesus.
Isobel started her group and it has gone from strength to strength for over 9 years now and still going.
It was wonderful to see the transformation in Isobel and she saw God working in herself, and in the children (both boys and girls).
Neil is right – it is a wonderful ‘human’ story, but only possible through the presence of Jesus, and fixing our eyes upon Jesus.
